Spotlight on Cardiology

The Heart of Children’s Healthcare

"These specialists will help expand the capabilities of Children’s Hospital to better serve the children of Southwestern Ontario."

- Dr. Guido Filler, Chair/Chief, Department of Paediatrics.

The Paediatric Cardiology Program at Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre, is an important part of many children’s lives.

Seeing approximately 1,800 patients a year from across Southwestern Ontario (that’s like a classroom of children every week!), the Cardiology Program at Children’s provides crucial services such as testing and diagnosis of heart conditions, treatment planning and specialized care both before and after surgery.

Many of the children seen by Cardiologists have known or suspected heart conditions. Children with other serious illnesses are also monitored because some may have a high risk of developing heart-related issues.

An exciting development at Children’s is the recruitment of three Paediatric Cardiologists this year. Drs. Rosenberg, Rauch and Welisch will further strengthen the program with an enhanced range of sub-specialties. Dr. Ralf Rauch is renowned for his work in the genetic causes of cardiac anomalies. Dr. Eva Welisch is a specialist in postoperative care. And Dr.Herschel Rosenberg is welcomed for his knowledge and experience in fetal echocardiography and congenital heart disease.

Faces of Children’s Cardiology

From children with known heart conditions, to children undergoing medical treatments that put them at high risk of heart complications, the Cardiology Program touches thousands of lives. Meet Zac, Hailey, Owen and Annabelle – just four of the over 1,800 kids Children’s Cardiology sees each year.

Zac, Age 8 – Truncus Arteriosus. A rare heart defect that causes excessive blood
flow to the heart.

Hailey, Age 1 – Leukemia. Her heart
will be monitored for signs of damage from chemotherapy.

Owen, Age 4 – Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome. A rare congenital heart defect where the left side of
the heart is severely under developed.

Annabelle, Age 5 – Kawasaki Disease. An inflammatory disease that can damage the heart.
