I love spending time with my grandma. One day we were walking downtown doing some errands. I don’t remember what happened next but we were hit by a car that jumped the curb. My grandma absorbed the main impact. The newspaper said I flew 30 feet across the parking lot.
I had a lot of things wrong with me after that. The specialists at Children’s kept me in a coma so that my brain wouldn’t swell too much. I can’t count the number of bones in my body that were broken. I don’t like to think about it. After five weeks at Children’s, I went home – thay had put me back together! My grandma and I still get together. She is getting better too!
Last July I got real sick and went to Children’s Emergency. For my mom, Emergency is like a second home because she works there as a nurse. Once admitted, my oxygen levels went down and my blood pressure and heart rate went up. Mommy’s co-workers determined that I had an E Coli infection and moved us over to the Paediatric Critical Care Unit. I was there for 31 days.
Blood clots had formed blockages throughout my body. My heart, kidneys and bowels all suffered damage. The clots went into my eyes, and I had five surgeries to fix them. The doctors tried everything, but the damage is permanent and now I am blind. I was very close to dying. My parents think that I have something significant to do in my life and that is why I am still here. I agree!
I was born with a collapsed lung and was rushed to Children’s Hospital. They took great care of me there and fixed me right up. But that was my first visit. One year later, with my heart beating rapidly and a temperature of 104 degrees, we raced to Children’s again. The doctors didn’t know what was wrong, and kept me in quarantine for two whole days. After many tests they found a bacterial infection in my bloodstream.
Mommy says that not knowing was scary, but that the staff at the hospital were great. They gave me medicine through an IV for five more days, and let mom sleep beside me. Mom was pregnant with my little brother then, and the nurses made sure they looked after all of us.
