Childhood Obesity

There is a risk that children today will not live as long as their parents. The number one factor is obesity. Children’s Hospital and Children’s Health Research Institute are unlocking the medical science behind obese kids.

Huge impact on life expectancy

Obesity is now having a significant impact on the life expectancy of our children. Because of obesity, there is a risk that this generation may not live as long as their parents. One out of every four children in Canada is overweight or obese. Yet, there are limited programs and services available to help children and their families tackle this growing problem.

Significant health consequences

Childhood obesity is a complex metabolic disorder. Causes can range from pre-disposed genetics and high fat foods to portion size and inactivity. At Children’s Hospital and Children’s Health Research Institute, the goal is to implement research and interventions that go beyond diet and exercise. In order to be effective, we need to address the underlying causes of childhood obesity.

Help us unlock the medical science

With support from our donors, Children’s Hospital and Children’s Health Research Institute is developing:

  • An obesity clinic that will improve the health status and well being of obese and overweight children
  • An effective referral process and evidence based clinical programs for obese children
  • A hub for collaborative research on obesity in children that will help identify the prevalence causes and risk factors for obesity.
