Childhood Obesity

Thank you for RAISING HOPE®
for obese children

Currently in Canada, one out of every four children and youth is overweight or obese. Childhood obesity is a complex metabolic disorder. Determining factors can range from high fat foods and inactivity to portion size and pre-disposed genetics.

Children’s Hospital and Children’s Health Research Institute are working together to address the underlying causes of childhood obesity.

“Our goal is to develop targeted interventions that help unlock the medical science behind obesity in children. Our efforts will be a vital part of a coordinated solution – locally, provincially and globally.”

Dr. Guido Filler, Chair/Chief Pediatrics, Children’s Hospital, London Health Sciences Centre

Your support is helping to change lives.

Some of the successful achievements to date:

  • The obesity clinic has been operating since May 2009 with dedicated staff, a physician lead and robust outcome measures. The program has enrolled 50 participants in a year-long intervention.
  • Ongoing development of parallel partnerships that can conduct research at the community and school board levels to improve awareness and knowledge of healthy eating and physical activity among students, educators and families.
  • Conducting a randomized 2-year trial comparing metformin and lifestyle changes in children 10-16 years old.

At Children’s our goal is to enhance research findings and implement interventions that address the underlying causes of childhood obesity.
