Injury Prevention

Thank you for RAISING HOPE®
to keep our children safe

There are nearly 600 paediatric injury admissions and more than 10,000 injury related Emergency Department visits to Children’s Hospital each year. At Children’s Hospital, the focus on prevention, awareness and education is an innovative approach to prevent injuries before they occur.

Your support is creating new injury prevention programs that keep children safe.

Some of the successful achievements to date:

  • The first hospital in Ontario to implement The Period of Purple Crying® – an internationally recognized shaken baby syndrome prevention program.  To date, more than 15,000 families have participated.  With consultation and support from Children’s Hospital, 17 other hospitals with a birthing centre in southwestern Ontario have or are in the process of implementing the program.
  • The only hospital in Ontario with a bicycle helmet giveaway program that provides helmets to children and teens that come into the Emergency Department with a cycling-related injury and are at risk for another injury.
  • A new Injury Prevention Counselor role – the first of its kind in North America, this person discusses safety issues and develops actions plans with patients and their families to prevent future injuries.
  • Implemented an injury-mapping project for motor vehicle collisions, rural injuries, ATV injuries and shaken baby syndrome cases.  The results identify neighborhoods and high-risk areas that can be targeted for injury prevention interventions and media campaigns.

Research shows that a trauma centre is the most effective place to implement injury prevention programs and deliver prevention education.  The Injury Prevention program at Children’s Hospital is helping keep children safe.
