Mental Health

One in five children suffer from a mental health disorder. Only one in three get help. Children’s Hospital is helping to change the odds.

The impact of mental health problems

When children have a physical illness of injury, treatment is provided right away. But children with a mental illness are often undiagnosed and untreated. The most common mental health problems among children and teenagers are anxiety, depression, attention problems and eating disorders.

The key is early intervention

Children and youth with mental disorders are often identified and referred into the system too late. Their problems get worse with time. Children’s Hospital is helping to change the odds. The hospital is leading a national initiative to educate family physicians so that they can better diagnose, treat and refer children and teens with mental health disorders.

  • Educating and training family physicians so that they can better diagnose and refer children and teens with mental health problems;
  • Creating resources and tools that will help children, families and caregivers better understand mental health disorders and seek help.
