Palliative Care

Thank you for RAISING HOPE®
for the palliative care program

Each year, 60-70 children die at Children’s Hospital. Yet, until recently, it was the only remaining academic paediatric centre in Canada without a formalized palliative care program.

Palliative care is vitally important in the health care journey of a seriously ill child. At Children’s Hospital, our hope is to make their last days more comfortable. Our philosophy of care is about listening, advocating, supporting, caring and remembering.

Your support has enhanced our palliative care services.

Some of the successful achievements to date:

  • Hired a Paediatric Nurse Practitioner to assume the role of clinical lead and develop a specialized service of palliative care for inpatients and outpatients at Children’s Hospital.
  • Palliative care education, care tools and resources including specialized consultation and mentorship to staff caring for children and their families.
  • Enhanced bereavement care to families including resources for siblings, parents, grandparents and friends; the development of a bereavement information follow-up policy; sibling bereavement groups; and expanding the Memory Box program.
  • Being accessible and available 24/7 to any child and family in the community in need of palliative care support.

The Palliative Care program helps to optimize the quality of life for infants, children and adolescents who have progressive or life-limiting illnesses. Children’s strives to ensure that the focus is on living each day to the fullest rather than waiting for death to occur.
