Quality of Life

Some kids live with chronic illness every day. Children’s Health Research Institute is finding ways to make their lives better.

Living longer, living better

Thanks to modern medicine, children with chronic illnesses are living longer and more independently than ever before. But they often face daily challenges that have a profound effect on their quality of life. Some children lose their hair during cancer treatment. Some may be left out at school after an epileptic seizure, and some children have to take over 20 pills a day to treat their cystic fibrosis. It is no longer good enough to just treat illnesses. At Children’s Health Research Institute, researchers are working to improve their quality of life and that of their families.

Help us find ways to improve the lives of our sick children

With support from our donors, Children’s Health Research Institute is:

  • Leading a national research study on children with epilepsy and their families to determine what impacts their quality of life and how care can be improved;
  • Conducting research to understand how hair follicles can be protected in children undergoing cancer treatment, so that hair loss can be prevented or reduced;
  • Conducting research to better understand the causes of brain swelling in children with traumatic brain injuries; and
  • Leading community studies that assess the health and well-being of all children in our community who suffer from various health problems and challenges.
